2. Physical Properties
Appearance: Presents as a low – viscosity pale yellow liquid, which is easy to handle and mix in various production processes. This liquid form allows for uniform dispersion in different materials, ensuring consistent antioxidant performance.
Melting Point: Has a melting point of around 14 °C. This relatively low melting point means it can be easily processed at moderate temperatures, reducing energy consumption during production.
Flash Point: The flash point is above 200 °C, indicating high thermal stability and a low risk of ignition during normal handling and processing, providing safety assurance in industrial operations.
Density: At 20 °C, its density is approximately 0.98 g/ml. This density value is crucial for accurate dosage and formulation calculations in manufacturing processes.
Viscosity: Exhibits a viscosity of 85 – 90 mPa·s at 20 °C, enabling smooth flow and easy incorporation into different matrices.
Solubility: It is insoluble in water (≤0.1%), but highly soluble in common organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n – hexane, methanol, and toluene (>50% solubility in each). This solubility profile makes it suitable for use in a wide range of organic – based materials.
3. Chemical Reactivity
Stability: Antioxidant 1520 is stable under normal storage conditions. However, like many antioxidants, it may gradually degrade over time when exposed to extreme heat, light, or high – humidity environments. Therefore, proper storage in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight is recommended.
Reaction Mechanism: It functions as a multifunctional antioxidant. With its 2,4 thioether substitutional groups, it can act as both a primary and secondary antioxidant. As a primary antioxidant, it donates a hydrogen atom to free radicals, terminating the radical chain reaction and preventing oxidative degradation. As a secondary antioxidant, it can decompose hydroperoxides, which are intermediate products of oxidation, into non – radical species, further inhibiting the oxidation process.
4. Applications
Elastomer Industry
Synthetic Rubbers: It is highly effective in protecting synthetic rubbers such as butadiene rubber (BR), styrene – butadiene rubber (SBR), nitrile – butadiene rubber (NBR), and styrene – butadiene – styrene block copolymer (SBS). In the production of tires, for example, Antioxidant 1520 helps prevent the rubber from aging due to heat, oxygen, and mechanical stress during the tire’s service life, thus improving tire durability and safety.
Thermoplastic Elastomers: It also shows excellent performance in thermoplastic elastomers, maintaining their physical properties over time. In the manufacturing of automotive interior components made of thermoplastic elastomers, it can prevent the materials from becoming brittle and losing their elasticity due to oxidation.
Plastic Industry
Polyolefins: In polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) plastics, Antioxidant 1520 can protect against thermal – oxidative degradation during processing (such as extrusion and injection molding) and during long – term use. This ensures the stability and quality of plastic products like plastic pipes, containers, and automotive parts.
Engineering Plastics: For engineering plastics such as polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile – butadiene – styrene (ABS), it helps maintain their mechanical and aesthetic properties, preventing yellowing and embrittlement caused by oxidation.
Lubricant and Oil Industry
Lubricating Oils: It is added to lubricating oils to inhibit oxidation, which can lead to the formation of sludge, varnish, and acids that can damage engines and machinery. By preventing oxidation, it extends the service life of lubricants and reduces the need for frequent oil changes.
Adhesive and Sealant Industry
Adhesives: It can be used in various adhesives, such as those used in the assembly of electronic devices, automotive components, and furniture. By preventing oxidation, it helps maintain the adhesive strength and stability over time.
Sealants: In sealants used to prevent the ingress of moisture, dust, and gases, Antioxidant 1520 protects the sealant material from degradation, ensuring long – term sealing performance.
5. Usage and Dosage
Usage: Antioxidant 1520 can be added directly to the material during the manufacturing process. It should be thoroughly mixed to ensure uniform distribution throughout the matrix. For example, in the production of rubber compounds, it can be added during the mixing stage with other additives such as vulcanizing agents and fillers.
Dosage: The normal usage levels typically range between 0.05% – 0.3%. However, for some special applications, depending on the substrate, manufacturing process, and performance requirements, the optimal concentration may be as high as 1.0% or more. For instance, in applications where the material is exposed to extremely harsh oxidative conditions, a higher dosage may be necessary to provide sufficient protection.
6. Advantages
High – Efficiency: Even at low dosage levels, it can effectively protect organic materials from thermo – oxidative degradation, providing long – term stability.
Multifunctional: Acting as both a primary and secondary antioxidant, it offers comprehensive protection against different stages of the oxidation process.
Non – Staining and Non – Discoloring: It does not cause staining or discoloration of the materials it is added to, making it suitable for applications where visual appearance is important, such as in clear plastics and light – colored elastomers.
Low Volatility: With low volatility, it remains in the material over time, maintaining its antioxidant effectiveness and reducing the risk of loss during processing and use.
Good Compatibility: It has good compatibility with a wide range of other additives and raw materials, allowing for easy formulation in different industries.
7. Handling and Safety
Personal Protective Equipment: When handling Antioxidant 1520, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including chemical – resistant gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing.
